Durham Business Club Celebrates 45 Years with Mayor’s Growth Vision

Published by Sue Park

One year on, Durham Business Club welcomed North East Mayor Kim McGuinness back to the stage at Radisson Blu Durham as she outlined ambitious plans to boost tourism and economic growth across the region. Speaking to around 100 members in a fireside chat with club chair Graham Soult, she described the North East as “the best place in the world” and highlighted tourism’s role in driving prosperity despite ongoing financial pressures on businesses and households.

The evening also celebrated Durham Business Club’s 45th anniversary, train operator Lumo joined the celebrations, with communications director Richard Salkeld helping cut a ceremonial cake and Radisson Blu created the perfect atmosphere for an insightful and uplifting evening.

The occasion made even more special as we unveiled Durham Business Club logo in gold and a touching tribute was read by Keith Moffat, in memory of his late father Tom, who set up DBC.

The event was a valuable opportunity for the North East business community to hear directly from the mayor about the progress made so far, the challenges still to overcome and the ambitions shaping the region’s future.

Graham Soult added “What I particularly appreciated was the positive tone in the room. As we have come to expect from our DBC members, the audience was engaged, thoughtful and respectful throughout, and Kim was candid, warm and generous with her answers, even on some difficult topics.

One thing I always value about Durham Business Club events is that they bring together people from across the world of business who care deeply about the North East and want to see the region succeed, regardless of politics and that spirit was very evident.”

At Durham Business Club, we are passionate about creating meaningful conversations that connect business leaders with the people driving change across the North East so it was wonderful to see so many businesses represented from across the region.

Huge thank you to event supporters Radisson Blu Hotel Durham, outstanding food and hospitality as always, and Lumo who share in our passion for the region.
